Crafts & Yaps: FAQ

Crafts & Yaps: FAQ

Sneha Roy

Why Crafts & Yaps?

Because we all need a place to hang out, meet new people, or catch up with old friends without the formality or quiet awkwardness of a networking event. No pressure. No agenda. Just you, a craft, and a room full of people who also just wanted to make something with their hands.

Why is it so cheap?

Because a chill, social hang shouldn't break the bank.

We keep our groups small and make absolutely zero profit from C&Y. The [HKD $100] ticket covers our rent for the space and that's it. No markup, no hidden fees, nothing.

We host this because we want people who love making things to meet each other, meet us, and find their people. That's the whole point.

Is it only for women?

Not at all! Everyone is welcome.

Most of our C&Y participants have been women, but we've had the full range of identities, ethnicities, and backgrounds at our table. Honestly, that's what makes it so special. You will meet someone you'd never have crossed paths with otherwise.

Do I need to know anything about woodworking?

Zero experience needed. Not even a little.

C&Y isn't a skills class. You don't leave having "learned woodworking." You leave having made something, learned something small about woodworking or wood craft along the way, and (hopefully) had a genuinely good time doing it.

We'll walk you through everything. All you need to bring is yourself.

Can I come alone?

Yes, and honestly, most people do.

Coming alone is a feature, not a bug. It means you're actually open to meeting someone new instead of just talking to the person you arrived with. Some of our favourite C&Y moments have come from two strangers ending up deep in conversation over a piece of wood.

What kind of crafts?

Honestly? It's sometimes a surprise to us too right up until the day! (Did someone say ADHD??!)

Here's how it works: we take stock of whatever wood we have left over in the shop and figure out how to reuse it instead of throwing it away. We've repurposed so much old furniture through C&Y sessions.

One time, someone donated a large antique apothecary cabinet to us, beautiful thing, but structurally unsafe. It would have collapsed eventually and hurt someone, so restoring it wasn't an option. Instead, we carefully cut it into pieces and used it in a C&Y session. People learned about the age of the wood, how to read its structure, how to paint on it, and how to get those clean lines you see in nice wood art.

Every session is different. But we promise: you'll always leave knowing a little more about wood and how to work with it and you'll have made something real.

Where is it?

Crafts & Yaps is held at our studio on 2-4 Elgin Street, Central.

Usually the first Thursday of the month. We will share the exact directions and door code once you have registered.

How long is a session?

We say it’s 1 hour. But here’s the thing - we stick around because we love it, and most people leave around the 1.5 hour mark. It moves at its own pace. Sometimes faster, sometimes slower depending on the craft and the conversation. You are welcome to stay as long as you like, no pressure.

How many people per session?

We keep groups small, 12people max. It's a small gathering, and it stays that way on purpose.

How often does it happen?

Roughly once a month though sessions do sell out fast. The best way to not miss one is to join the waitlist.

What should I bring / wear?

Just yourself, honestly. But a heads up: you might get a little sawdusty, a little painty, or a little messy depending on the craft. Wear something you're okay getting a bit messy in. We also have aprons in case you need extra protection.

We'll have everything else you need.

How do I join?

WhatsApp us and we'll add you to the waitlist! We never expected C&Y to get this popular but we're genuinely happy to have this problem.
