Lessons on Social Connection through Woodworking: Collaboration with HK Creators

Sneha Roy

There is something about a traditional networking event that makes even the most social people want to stare at their phones. The name badges. The elevator pitches. The quiet pressure to say the right thing to the right person before the night ends.

Last month, we tried something different.

A collaboration built on a shared goal

We partnered with HK Creators, a community of creators of diverse digital content. On paper, our worlds look very different. But we were aligned on what mattered: we wanted a group of strangers to leave the room feeling like they had made a real friend or two. So together, we designed a woodwork experience around that single goal.

What nervousness actually does for us

When we got started, there was a shared energy in the room: curiosity mixed with genuine nerves. Several participants told us they had never tried woodwork before. That kind of nervousness, the kind that comes from trying something completely new, is actually exactly what we were hoping for.

When we feel that way, we lower our guard. We show a little vulnerability. And that small psychological shift is where real conversations begin.

The moment we stopped needing to prompt anything

It happened gradually. As the group grew more comfortable with their tools, they grew more comfortable with each other. Before we knew it, we were not facilitating conversation at all. The energy in the room was doing it for us: tips and tricks being passed across the table, ideas being generated together, stories about work, culture, family, dogs, and everything in between.

Nobody was networking. Everybody was just talking.

The problem we did not expect

The event ended, and nobody wanted to leave.

In a city where most of us have rushed in and out of networking events just to "show face," we had the opposite problem. When we realized the group wanted to stay longer, we were more than happy to make room. Because that is exactly the kind of space we want to build.

Everyone walked away with three things: a gorgeous one-of-a-kind wood carving they made with their own hands, the quiet confidence of having stepped outside their comfort zone, and at least one new connection that felt genuinely earned.

What this could look like for your team

We would love to explore what a craft-based experience could look like for your team or community. Whether you are looking for a team-building format that actually builds something, or a community event with more depth than a cocktail hour, we are open to the conversation.
