Why Making Together Matters: ACS x TNN x AIA Vitality Hub

Some workshops stay with you. Not because of what you made, but because of what you felt while making it.

On March 8th (International Women’s Day)], we had the privilege of hosting a woodblock carving and printing workshop in collaboration with The New Normal (TNN) and AIA Vitality Hub, an afternoon designed specifically for migrant domestic workers in Hong Kong.

The goal was simple: create a mindful, hands-on experience that put creativity and expression front and centre. Woodblock carving turned out to be the perfect medium for that. There's real artistry in the carving itself, every mark deliberate, every line a choice. And then there's the moment of printing, where you finally see what you've been building up to. It's a process that asks you to slow down, pay attention, and trust your hands.

What we didn't expect was how much the craft would open up conversation.

Traditional crafts carry wisdom that's easy to overlook. When you're carving and you slip, and you will, you have two choices: panic, or adapt. You learn quickly that a mistake isn't the end of the design. It's just part of it. That kind of thinking, how to sit with imperfection, how to keep going, how to make something beautiful out of an unexpected turn, translates far beyond the workbench.

We're deeply grateful to TNN and AIA Vitality Hub for making this workshop possible. And we left the day with something we want to say clearly:

This is the kind of work we want to do more of.

If you're an organisation, school, or community group looking to create meaningful experiences for marginalised communities in Hong Kong, we'd love to hear from you. Reach out and let's build something together.

A Collective Space is a woodwork and wellbeing social enterprise based in Mui Wo, Lantau Island. We run workshops, programs, and community experiences that use slow craft as a tool for connection and wellbeing. [www.acollective.space]
