The evolution of our Mui Wo studio: From rooftop workshop to inclusive makerspace
a collective spaceShare
When we first started woodworking, our living room and rooftop in Cheung Chau doubled as our studios. As our passion and community grew, so did our dreams for something bigger. We wanted a place that wasn't your typical industrial building style workshop, and had a more relaxed feel where anyone of any ability could access tools, learn skills, and feel like they belong. That’s how our Mui Wo studio was born, a purpose-built makerspace where creativity, sustainability, and inclusion meet.
A Space to Build, Heal, and Connect
At first, our studio was simply a place where we could make a mess, prototype new furniture, and run woodworking workshops without getting sawdust in our rice cooker! But, once we started realising and experiencing the lack of Makerspaces in our city, our dream grew.
We dreamed of a space where anyone, beginners, women, LGBTQIA+ folks, teens, hobbyists, could safely learn traditional woodworking, create with confidence, and feel true belonging.
Over the past year, our studio has blossomed into:
- Supportive, judgement-free woodworking classes and craft workshops
- Access to inclusive, professional-grade tools through our Makerspace program
- Free sawdust and wood shavings for local gardeners and eco-projects
- Sustainable wood upcycling and partnerships with organisations and schools for social and environmental programs
